The events of the past few years have proven that universal, bi-partisan support for the most essential guardrails of democracy – safe and fair elections and the peaceful transfer of power – can no longer be taken for granted.
Pledging ourselves to the protection of these guardrails is essential. Failing that, the democratic norms and institutions that we treasure will continue to erode.
At a time when Americans and their political parties find little common ground, we aim to carve out a safe, non-partisan space in which elected officials (and others) can strengthen our national security by pledging themselves to democracy, safe and fair elections, and the rule of law.
The Safe and Fair Elections Pledge asks every elected official to acknowledge this most essential cornerstone of democracy. Reluctance to do so should raise real questions among constituents, donors and colleagues across the political spectrum.
This is simple, really. It's a non-partisan space that we all should be able to share comfortably, and it's a piece of common ground from which we can begin to rebuild confidence in our country, our political system, and the people elected to do it.
Team Democracy is non-partisan, supporting no specific candidate, political party, or legislative initiative. The Safe and Fair Elections Pledge is governed by these non-negotiable principles:
We believe that American elections can be both secure and widely accessible, and we support all means (technological and otherwise) to assured they are made both more secure, and more accessible.
We believe that truth matters; and that disinformation has no place in elections, or in governance more generally.
We believe in the peaceful transfer of power and reliance on the courts to resolve any election disputes.
We believe that all elected officials should be open and accountable in their support for free, fair and secure elections, and the peaceful transfer of power.
